< A Word to the Wise >
Someone was trying to find...I don't remember the context, but someone wanted to know the meaning of palatine.First, it is the name of one of the seven hills on which Rome is built, in fact, it is the central hill. Consequently, you may have heard of Palatine as the name of a hill, when an historical society or developer or business wanted a name that sounded important. The palatines would be a series of hills. Also, palatine is a term used in apparel, to refer to the once popular fur scarf (tippet). Probably the meaning someone was looking for concerned title and rank. A palatine may be one of royalty: a lord who exercises authority over a province, or even someone at a low level: a vassal, who holds authority in the property he oversees. At the least, a palatine is a high official.
From the Latin, and presently derived from the French form of the noun, we might think of Lori Eppler as palatine of the music program, and all the anthem folios.

< The Ship at Sea >
The Hebrews had something in common with my mother. Both in O.T. and N.T. times, the Hebrews were basically afraid of the water. I was an adult before I learned to swim ... even though I grew up among Tappan, Atwood, Leesville, Clendening, Piedmont, and Salt Fork Reservoirs/Lakes/Dams.It was a love hate relationship: water was the great symbol of God's power, of baptism, and of the Holy Spirit. But the few stories of ships at sea reaffirm the evil of water: the flood, Jonah, the disciples with Jesus having fallen asleep, Paul tossed at sea.The people of Lebanon and the people of Egypt already had a great history of shipbuilding and open water commerce. The Hebrews built row boats, so to speak. The next time you see a great ship, remember the church, for the symbol of the Christian church around the world is a ship being tossed at sea. Next time, we'll look at "hymns of the sea."

John Wesley's Famous Motto
Do all the good you can By all the means you can In all the ways you can In all the places you can To all the people you can As long as ever you can.

Barb’s Bon Voyage! Retirement can be a “scary time”…‘Cause it implies we’re “growing old”…And we reflect on other’s words…And stories we’ve been told…‘Bout how folks become quite listless…Completely lost… depressed… e’en desolate…Midst the clutter of lost thoughts…That remind us…“It’s too late”
Now fools are said.. “to rush right in”…Where angels “fear to tread”But the wise…ponder their expectations…And “plan ahead” instead. It sounds so keen.. for other folks…But when that “folk”... is us…We “shake a little in our boots”And start to “stew”... and fuss…It isn’t always...willingly…That we “release the reins”…And let the “horses run amuck”…‘Tis without logic... and inane…
But somewhere twixt feast and famine…The scriptures do suggest…That we each “find another niche”And take some time to rest…Not always on “our laurels”...But seeking other venues…We can “fill our plates” …again…By “looking o’er Life’s menus”…There’s truth in that expression…“God’s never closed a window”…before…In His love.. and wisdom…He opens “another door”
And though the night seems darkest…Just before the dawn… Berries seem the sweetest…Near season’s end... just before they’re gone…But the joy there is “in knowing”…Another Spring will soon “restore”…Another crop or bounty…Perhaps… e’en sweeter than before! And thus applying Nature’s cycle…To “retiring”... and one can…It’s a metamorphic marvel…Sharing whatever… the good Life “has in hand.
Oh…‘tis fun to be reminiscing…But memories only “fuel the past”….There’s a new dawn ev’ry morning…And always a “youthful forecast”So enjoy your “pause”… in “storing”…The years you’ve labored long…But be ready to sing tomorrow…A bright new happy song!Filled with inspiration, blessings, hope and faith…A zest for new horizons…as you chart a brand new course…God speed!...our love and prayers surround you…As you “jolly-well” set forth!
